How to Ensure Fair Salaries for Your Church Staff

Many churches struggle with knowing what a fair wage is for their pastors and staff. Our guess is that your church is among them.

For more than 10 years, Church Law & Tax has been creating the Compensation Handbook for Church Staff to help churches better understand fair pay for those serving in ministry. The book has helped countless churches plan compensation packages. But we’ve realized a physical book is no longer the best way to share this data. That’s why the Compensation Handbook is getting an upgrade this year.

This summer, we will be launching ChurchSalary—a brand-new website to help churches set compensation with confidence and help church staff know their pay is fair. And we want you to be the first to experience the new site!

What will make ChurchSalary different from the Compensation Handbook?

ChurchSalary will continue to have the largest available church-specific compensation database in the country, giving you the most accurate information on how church employees should be paid. You’ll still have the ability to look at 15 different ministry positions, but now you’ll be able to add in more experiences to these roles to get a better view of fair pay for individuals.

ChurchSalary will not only help you set compensation for your church staff, but it will also help church staff know if they’re being paid fairly. If you work for a church, you’ll have the opportunity to receive personal salary reports letting you know salary ranges based on your position and personal experiences (such as education, years of service, and so on). You’ll get information on your specific role, along with information about your location, in order to help you gauge the fairness of your pay.

This information will allow you to properly review a position you’ve been offered and understand the financial situation you’ll be in if you decide to accept the position. If you’re already working at a church you love but feel financially strained, you’ll be able to use the personal salary report to help you ask for an appropriate raise.

When using ChurchSalary, you’ll have access to our salary calculator and cost of living comparison, be able to compare the pay of non-ministry jobs with your current role, and have a better understanding of why and how churches set compensation.

The hope is that this information will create beneficial conversations between churches and their staffs, giving churches a healthy way to understand their employees’ financial situations.

What can you do to get involved?

We can’t wait for ChurchSalary to launch, but we need your help before that happens. If ChurchSalary sounds like a tool you’ll want to use, will you please take the National Church Compensation Survey? This survey powers our tool, and your input about your current church compensation will help us create an even more robust tool for you—and others in ministry—to use. And for giving us five minutes of your time to take the survey, we’ll also give you a free gift.

If ChurchSalary is something you’d be interested in using, then check out our ChurchSalary Coming Soon Page, which will give you more details about the tool—and if you sign up, you’ll be the first to know when ChurchSalary goes live this summer.
