Car Expenses—Commuting

Introduction

This week we turn our attention to the topic of commuting. Start by completing the following quiz. Then review the Executive Summary for the key points on this topic, or read the Weekly Lesson for a complete discussion of this topic.

Pastor C owns a home that is 10 miles from the church and commutes to work each day. This week, Pastor C drives his car on the following trips: (1) On Monday and Tuesday he commutes directly from his home to the church, and then back home again at the end of the day, incurring 40 miles of driving. (2) On Wednesday, he stops at a local hospital on the way to church to visit a member of his congregation. The hospital is 4 miles from his home, and 6 miles from the church. Following this visit, he drives the remaining 6 miles to the church. (3) On Thursday, he stops at the hospital on the way home from church at the end of the day to visit a member of his congregation. Following this visit, he drives the remaining 4 miles to his home. (4) On Friday, he drives to a small town 50 miles away to conduct a funeral. Which of these trips are "personal commuting miles" and which can be treated as business related?
