Can Churches Get Political in an Election Year?
The stage is set for the 2024 presidential election, and numerous races for congressional seats and ballot measures are underway nationwide.
These coming weeks will bring tension and debate in many places: homes, workplaces, and, yes, churches. With the latter, one question invariably arises from congregants: Can our church get political?
Some will ask because they want to see their church take a stand on a certain issue or candidate. Others will ask because they see their church taking some type of action and wonder whether it should.
Church Law & Tax’s Recommended Reading page helps sort through many of the considerations, including articles from attorneys Richard Hammar and Erik Stanley and others.
Church Law & Tax also recently created a new downloadable PDF that explores 10 activities often contemplated by churches and ministers—and examines whether those activities would jeopardize a church’s tax-exempt status. It’s a handy free guide for you, and one you can easily share with other churches and leaders you know.
The Lord bless you and keep you,
