Responding Safely and Effectively to Natural Disasters
From now until the end of November, many parts of the country will face the continued threat of hurricanes.
The toll these storms take on the communities they hit is nothing short of massive: In 2023, for instance, Hurricane Idalia caused a combined $3.6 billion in damages in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Churches in these communities face the same level of damage and devastation as homes and businesses.
How can leaders respond?
Jamie Aten, the founder and co-director of the Humanitarian Disaster Institute (HDI) at Wheaton College, wrote three articles for Church Law & Tax about hurricane preparation and response. As hurricane season continues, Aten reviewed and updated these articles. One talks about preparation before the storm, another addresses creating crisis communication plans, and the third explains the ways to adequately budget for the resources needed to respond to a disaster.
These articles offer good, practical guidance for all churches as it relates to preparing for, and responding to, disasters. Take time now to see what your church can do to position itself in a stronger, more responsive way.
The Lord bless you and keep you,
