Understanding the Lifecycle of a Church
Why do some churches survive, some thrive, and others die?
Isn’t that a loaded question?
Answering it requires a lot of consideration. And careful thinking about a lot of things.
Things like discerning and following God’s vision and direction for the church. Healthy leadership. Sound governance. Great communication between pastoral leadership, staff, volunteers, members, and weekly attenders. And so on.
Gloo, Church Law & Tax’s parent company, is thinking a lot about how to understand this question, and it’s one reason it continues important work with Barna to help leaders know how to measure what matters (you can learn more about it here). By doing so, the hope is that leaders establish useful, relevant frameworks that help their churches not just survive—but also flourish and thrive.
This theme resonates because so much of today’s church landscape feels uncertain. By some counts, US churches are rapidly closing. Cultural and societal shifts that are unfamiliar to, or even opposed to, churches are afoot. Financial challenges, scandals, and gaps with leadership succession also weigh heavily within some congregations.
There are legal considerations to all of this, too. And the latest season of the Church Law podcast will dive into it. Listen as attorney and podcast host Erika Cole explains why church leaders are wise to understand which season their church is in—and how to effectively use that knowledge.
The Lord bless you and keep you,
