Achieving Accountability

Can a pastor also serve as church treasurer?

Question:
What is your opinion of a pastoral staff member serving as church treasurer? Can this provide good accountability?

Answer:
If the pastoral member is a qualified candidate for the church treasurer position and it is not prohibited by the church bylaws or constitution, this could work. The treasurer should be someone with accounting and financial skills that can help the church provide correct financial information and make informed financial decisions. There would need to be specific attention paid to the segregation of duties and any potential or perceived conflicts of interest.
