Calls for a national health care program will intensify as election day approaches. In a recent report, Secretary of Labor Lynn Martin and Secretary of Health and Human Services Louis Sullivan cautioned that any such program could have a devastating effect upon American businesses and workers. Secretary Martin observed in the report: “Our research showed that the plan will cost employers an additional $30 billion annually and will also result in a large subsidy which will cost taxpayers $36 billion a year more than what the federal government now spends on health care …. [The concept] means higher taxes and fewer jobs for American workers. Hardest hit will be the small businesses, whose costs will rise by 71%.” Secretary Sullivan added: “[Current proposals] would result in lost jobs, higher employer costs, higher taxes, and a huge new government-run health program …. It is unacceptable and unnecessary to put real jobs in jeopardy in order to address health care needs. We need to protect jobs, and improve access to insurance and to health care. We can do both.”
